Transit:

• Antigonish County: There is the option of taking the bus through the Antigonish Community Transit. Check the Routes section to see if the bus can get you where you wish to go.
• Pictou County: You may use Community Highland Association of the Disabled (CHAD) Transit if you are requiring on-demand or door-to-door service. Must book 24-hours ahead of time. This is available to everyone!

Taxi:

Throughout Anitgonish and Pictou Counties there are a number of options for taxi companies. Search "Taxi Service" and the name of your community in Yellow Pages to find the taxi closest to you.

Driver's License:

In order to obtain a driver's license in Nova Scotia you must be 16 years of age and be able to prove your understanding of road safety and how to drive a vehicle. If you have a drivers licence from another province in Canada you will have 90 days to obtain one for Nova Scotia.

• Learning how to drive: in order to learn the rules of the road and how to drive a car you can take classes at driver's schools. Schools in the area are:
• Ed Brown Driver Training School operates out of high schools in the Antigonish area.

• Randall Driving School located in Antigonish.
• Young Drivers New Glasgow

Rules and regulations when driving:

There are many rules about driving, as you will have learnt in driver's school. Here are reminders of a couple of very important ones:

1. Seat belt use is important for personal protection.
2. Impaired Driving it is against the law to drive a vehicle after drinking alcohol, drug use, etc.
3. Smoking (Smoke-Free Places Act) if you choose to smoke while driving, read over the regulations first.
4. Cell Phone Use while driving you are not allowed to use a hand held cell phone for texting or making a phone call. To use cell phones while driving they must be hands free.
5. Car seats: Children under the age of 9 must use a car or booster seat. Make sure your child is secured in the proper way before driving.

Purchasing and registering a vehicle: For information on purchasing a vehicle (new or used) you should start at the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Association. If you are interested in a used vehicle additional information is provided by Access Nova Scotia. After a vehicle has been purchased, the next step is to register it and receive a license plate to put on the vehicle. In order to fill out the form visit the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Insurance:

By law, you must hold insurance on your vehicle. This insurance will help you if you are in an accident, or if your vehicle is even stolen or damaged. A list of local insurances can be found at Yellow Pages.

The Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island ferry operates between Caribou, NS and Wood Islands, PEI. Schedules and fares are available on their website.
