The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library Board employs over 55 people in both full-time and part-time positions throughout both counties. Our staff comprises people from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds, including those with Masters of Library and Information Science degrees, educational programs, library technician diplomas, and more. The Board also prides itself on supporting the professional growth of its employees into other areas such as community development and technology.
During the year the Board also provides employment opportunities to youth through grants. These short term positions allow young people to enhance their skills, create meaningful community projects, and work in rural areas.
Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library invites applications for the following position:
- Branch Assistant – New Glasgow Library

Location: New Glasgow Public Library
Hours: Permanent, Part Time, with alternating 2-week schedule:
Week 1:
- Tuesday: 12:30pm - 8:30pm
- Wednesday: 12:30pm - 8:30pm
- Thursday: 5:00pm - 8:30pm
- Friday: 9:00am - 5:30pm
Week 2:
- Tuesday: 12:30pm - 8:30pm
- Thursday: 12:30pm - 8:30pm
- Friday: 9:00am - 5:30pm
- Saturday: 9:00am - 5:30pm
- Sunday (Sept - June): 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Summary:
This position is under the supervision of the Branch Assistant-in-Charge, and is responsible for
providing assistance to citizens in accessing all library materials, services, and programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- As a first point of contact, provides welcoming orientation and guidance to all those wishing to
access regional library materials, services, and programs.
- While interacting with the public, promotes library materials, services, and programs to all citizens.
- Provides efficient library service, including reader advisory, reference, referral, circulation,
assistance in using library databases, and general public assistance.
- Assists with clerical procedures such as shelving, shelf reading, and ensuring the efficient
operation of library routines.
- Leads or assists with library programs, for all ages (babies, children, youth and adult).
- Leads a book group at the library.
- Responsible to make suggestions for materials, service improvements, and programming
opportunities as well as communicate any public feedback.
- Responsible for keeping up-to-date on basic technology to be able to provide general assistance to
patrons.
- To work with library partners as required.
- Other duties as required.
Education & Experience:
- Minimum Grade 12
- Minimum one-year satisfactory employment, preferably in a library or other customer service-related role.
Rate of Pay:
- This position currently pays $15.30/hour, +4% Vacation Pay is accrued.
- In addition, employees
earn Sick Leave per month, and access to a Medical Plan Benefits and a RRSP Group Plans.
